3 Essential Tips in Choosing New External Hard Drive

Published by:

external-hard-drive

Today, with lots of data and stuffs to save and store, having external hard drive is a must. In the past, you only need a floppy disk (ever heard that?) to store your data. Then, come CD for bigger data storage, and followed with thumb drive for a more practical plug-and-play data storing. Lastly, you get in touch with external drive.

You might a bit confused about the difference between external hard drive with portable hard drive. The difference is in their power sources. Portable drive uses computer power when plugged in, while external drive uses external power outlet. It is sometimes equipped with fan to reduce the heat when used. The following are three important things you should consider when choosing an external hard drive.

  1. The capacity

You need to figure out on how much storage capacity that you need. You need to consider the kind of data and their capacities that you want to save. This is also linked closely with the price; the more capacity, the higher the prices. If you have no intention of storing videos, music, movies, your design or movie-related jobs, then you should choose lower capacity drive. Well, the drive has ranges of storage capacities from hundreds to thousand GB (this last one is now termed with Terabit or TB). So, it’s back to your needs. It’s a redundancy to buy high capacity drive just for your Word or PowerPoint, though?  Be wise in choosing the drive storage capacity.

  1. Automatic Backup

Your need to buy an external hard drive is to back up your data, right? So, do not forget to get some dependable automatic backup software. Having the program will ensure you to always have the backup tasks to be always done. For your convenience, always check that the software is working well.

  1. USB 3.0

If you have decided you need storage capacity, now you should find the external hard drive which has been equipped with USB 3.0. Now, if you have to transfer data up to terabit level using the old 2.0, you’ll surely have to have lots of patience. Theoretically, USB 2.0 has max data transfer up to 480 MB per second, while USB 3.0 could transfer up to 5 GB per second, up to 10 times than the 2.0. So, if you need the real quick transfer data capability, choose the drive with USB 3.0 feature.

Those are 3 important tips in choosing external hard drive for you. The tips are easy to follow but they might offer more secure feeling when you are about to purchase one.

How To Root Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 and Flash a Custom ROM

Published by:

galaxy-tab-2-10.1

Samsung has recently launched the latest version of its much popular Android tablet – The Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1. The massive sized tablet (10 Inches) is powered by Ice Cream Sandwich and can be easily upgraded to the latest Jelly Bean. Since I own this beauty personally, I can assure you that this device is so powerful and vibrant that it will not leave your hands and eyes for a single second.

The gaming and movie watching experience provided by this tab fulfilled my motive of investing my hard-earned money in a tablet. Although it reduces your mobility a bit (thanks to its massive size), this is a piece of technology which is a big time attention seeker and an envy inductor (winks). Coming back to rooting, the following tutorial is one of the easiest methods to gain the super-user access on this device and harness all its resources for even more hardcore gaming experience. Before we proceed, I would recommend you to go through all the cautions and warnings once again which are as follows:

  • Rooting voids any official guarantee or warranty you may have with your device.
  • If not done correctly, you may end up with a 10 inched paper weight (bricked phone).
  • Neither I nor anyone else on this site can be held responsible for any damage that may occur to your phone by the following process or any other process on this website.

Let’s get started

  • Create A Backup

Backup all the important information in your tablet to prevent any data loss at the later stage. Please note that if you do not backup the data now, you may lose it forever. Even if you confident with your rooting skills, it is still recommended to make a backup of all sensitive information.

  • Gather Resources

To begin with the rooting process, get the following files:

  • Odin
  • Root Package for your Tab 2

A small Google query will help you find both the things easily.

Lets Create Something Better

  • After you have downloaded the above two packages, extract them in different folders. We will first need to run Odin. Go to the Odin folder and double-click to execute it.
  • You will be shown a few options and buttons. Click on PDA and select the Root File you just extracted. The file has an extension .tar.md5.
  • Now you need to reboot the device. Switch it off normally but while turning it on, you must press the power button and the volume down button simultaneously. This will open a boot/download menu.
  • Connect your device to the computer through USB and uncheck the reparation box if it is checked.
  • The Final Part

Now press the Start button on screen and the rooting process will start. Just sit down calmly and think about all the things that you could now do with your Tab 2 10.1 while Odin is doing its work. Within a couple of minutes, your newly Rooted phone will be ready to roll. You should not be able to see a super-user icon in the app drawer that will allow you to take complete control over your phone.

How To  Flash a Custom ROM on Galaxy Tab 2 10.1

Flashing a custom rom on Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 is a piece of cake. Even a novice can accomplish this task easily. To start with, we first need a good rom that we can flash on our Tab 2. Head to Google and search for a good custom rom. Once you have decided which rom you want to install, download it and copy it to your device. After you have copied the rom on the device (in phone memory or SD Card), switch off your phone and follow the instructions below:

  1. Switch on your tablet by pressing the Volume Down button and Power button together.
  2. From the menu being displayed, select Install from SD Card and navigate to the custom rom we have copied to the device in the above steps. Select install and then confirm to start the installation.
  3. It will hardly take 3 minutes to install the new rom. Once installed, go back and then select the option – Wipe Data/Factory Reset.
  4. Once done, restart your phone normally.

Once the phone reboots, wait for a few minutes as the phone needs time to configure the new rom and hence makes the phone a bit laggy in the beginning. In a minute or two, your tablet will be ready with a new custom rom. Feel free to contribute to the article and make it easier for people around the world.

How to Root Htc One X and Flash a Custom ROM

Published by:

Htc One X

A big and bright screen, little cute feel buttons and nice simple HTC logo on the top – I call it perfection and so do the people who own a HTC One X. HTC One X is one of the smartest and the most powerful phone in the market. It is a phone that has set a standard for HTC and its competitors when it comes to Android smartphones. With a Quad Core CPU and Super IPS LCD2 Capacitive Touchscreen, this phone surely delivers what it promises. So let us see how can we enhance the power of this smartphone and turn it into a total gaming machine with even faster CPU and gain better control over the rest of the phone (Super-User mode) by Rooting it.

A word of caution: Although super-user mode gives you a lot more control over your phone, there are a few cautions and warnings that you must go through by visiting this page before you proceed further. Luckily, Rooting HTC One X is not as difficult as the early Android Phones by HTC thanks to an unofficial bootloader created by HTC (Surprise Surprise). And although the site says that not all damages incurred by their bootloader can be claimed under warranty (which indirectly means that they take responsibility of a few), I am not so convinced that they will take the responsibility of any damage incurred by this procedure involving their bootloader. All that said, since we have already decided to Root our device, lets get to work!

  • Back Me Up

The first and foremost thing that I always suggest to everyone is to backup all the important data in your phone. This makes sure that even if something goes wrong during the process, you still have your information safe with you. After you have backed up your data, proceed to the next step.

  • Gather Files
  • HTC Files and Folders

Click this link to download all the files you need to Root your HTC One X. Please note that these files are for HTC One X only. If you use them for any other model including HTC One X+, your phone may suffer damage. We will be updating the method to Root HTC One X+ soon.

  • Get Your Bootloader
  • unofficial Bootloader on HTCDev

As I mentioned earlier, HTC is now helping users to Root their phones by providing an unofficial Bootloader on HTCDev. Click here to go to the website and get your bootloader. Start by selecting ‘All Other Supported Models’ from the list on the right and follow the simple on screen instructions to get it working.

  • Unzip The Files

The files we downloaded in the second step for our phone must be unzipped now. Unzip them on your computer at a location where you can locate them when needed. For the sake of simplicity, I always unzip the files I might need immediately right on the desktop.

  • You Will Be A Developer Soon

Connect your phone to the computer using the USB cable. Enter the debugging mode and charge only mood. To switch on the debugging mode navigate to Settings >> Developer >> USB Debugging. For charge only mode, pull down the notification bar and select the Charge Only option from the USB Connection options.

  • The Most Important Part

Now that you have connected your phone to the computer, navigate to the folder on your computer where you had extracted the files. Depending on the operating system (Windows, Linux etc.) you are using, run the appropriate file.

Sit back and grab a cup of coffee while the program does its job. Please note that during the process, the phone might restart a couple of times or more. Don’t panic as this is all normal and the script is doing its work.

  • And we are done!

Was it difficult? Feel free to drop a comment if anything bothers you with the process or any other question you might have before you start rooting.

  • How to Flash a Custom ROM on Root Htc One X

Flashing means installing a new rom on your device. A custom rom changes the look and feel of the phone completely. The user interface is changed drastically!

To start with the flashing process, go to Google and find a custom rom that you would like to install on your HTC. Download the rom on your computer, attach your phone to the computer through USB and transfer it to your phone. After you have the rom on your device, follow the process below:

  1. Boot your phone into recovery mode. To do this, switch off your phone normally but for switching on, press the volume down key and the power key together.
  2. Once in the Boot menu, backup your rom (so that you don’t lose everything if something goes wrong) by selecting Backup and Restore >> Backup.
  3. Now wipe everything off the phone by executing the following three commands: Wipe Data/Factory Reset >> Delete All, Wipe the Cache Partition >> Wipe Cache Partition and Wipe dlvlk cache >> Wipe Cache.
  4. Now select Install from sd card and navigate to the rom on the device. Confirm your action by pressing yes.

You will be shown a success message as soon as the installation is complete. Please note that the phone will be a bit slow on first reboot. This is totally normal as phone is adjusting to the new rom. After a few minutes, it should be smooth and powerful like before!
