Why Does it Take So Long to Board?
There are a few different reasons for why it takes a long time to board, the prime one being that passengers must disembark first. Then the crew goes seat by seat to clean up after everyone. In a perfect world, we all clean up after ourselves, but even the best of us forget we leave things behind. While this is happening, the plane’s receiving a charge from a ground power unit (more on that in a moment). All of this takes time, and the boarding crew in the airport uses this time to make special seating arrangements.
What’s that Cable?
The large cable attached to the under carriage of the plan connects it to a portable GPU. These units are designed to supply auxiliary power to a plane when it’s idle. It keeps the lights on, the air flowing and the systems ready for takeoff.
How Does the Plane Actually Start?
Once everyone is on board, the portable power supply is disconnected after it provides a charge to the plane’s power unit. That power unit turns the engine over, which is why you typically hear a grinding or metallic sound as the plane begins to move.
